Girl branded a witch for getting aggregate 30 in BECE

Unfounded accusations of witchcraft against women are once again a hot topic.

Such alleged witches endure horrific treatment, which can even be fatal in some cases.

Women’s rights advocate Margaret Brew-Ward said on The Probe on Sunday that a very broad range of people are vulnerable to such assaults.

Even a young student from a rural location who performed above expectations on the Basic Education Certificate Examination (BECE) was labeled a witch, she disclosed.

“Recently, we heard about an instance when a girl with an aggregate score of roughly 30 in the BECE was [labeled a witch] when we visited one of the communities… In the meantime, you are aware that people in the cities aim for aggregate 8, eight 1s, and other such goals.

She claimed on the show that “just because no girl had ever graduated from secondary school in that village, thus for a girl to do that, she [must have been a witch]”
