‘I have not endorsed any aspiring flagbearer’ – Kufuor
John Agyekum Kufuor, a former president, has denied suggestions that he supported a hopeful flagbearer for the New Patriotic Party.
He claimed that media accounts of the recent Peduase Valley Resort Father’s Day soiree had completely misinterpreted what had happened and implied that he had supported the Vice President, Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, over the other hopefuls.
In a press statement clarifying the matter, the former president said that his warm comments for Dr. Bawumia had been misinterpreted by the media as an endorsement when it was not.
The Former President explained that when he had described the Veep as “a true son”, there was nothing political about his remarks or even the occasion.
He claims to be very close to every potential candidate and that he would support them wholeheartedly if they were chosen to serve as the Party’s flagbearer in the run-up to the 2024 elections.
“President Kufuor expects from the party and political hierarchies fair and un-engineered systems and processes that would lead to a fair selection of our next NPP flagbearer in the upcoming NPP flagbearership race in order to achieve party unity and sustain it thereafter for victory of the party in the 2024 elections.
“This should be free of coercion and political machinations so that the ultimately selected nominee, coming out of the uncompromised freewill of the voting delegates, can easily command the support and respect of all party faithfuls, and indeed, other Ghanaians sympathetic to our cause toward “breaking the eight,” “said the statement outlining the issues.
