President Akufo-Addo mourns with Japan

President Akufo-Addo has joined other international leaders in expressing sympathy to the Japanese people over the murder of Shinzo Abe, their former prime minister.

Shinzo Abe, the former prime leader of Japan, passed away on June 8, 2022, after being shot twice during a political rally.

He was in the middle of giving a speech when a shooter opened fire behind him.

“On behalf of the Government and People of Ghana, I send sincere condolences and deep sympathies to Emperor Naruhito, Prime Minister Fumio Kishida, the Government and People of Japan, and to his family, on the tragic murder of former Prime Minister Shinzo Abe, which occurred today,” President Akufo-Addo wrote on Facebook on June 8, 2022.

“Most heinous and vile conduct, which must earn the stern condemnation of all,” he said of Shinzo Abe’s murder.

Japan, he claimed “had lost a remarkable democrat, a patriot, and a noble son. All those who had the honor and pleasure of knowing and meeting him will miss him.”

On behalf of the Government and people of Ghana, I send sincere condolences and deep sympathies to Emperor Naruhito, Prime Minister Fumio Kishida, the Government and people of Japan, and to his family, on the tragic murder of former Prime Minister Shinzo Abe, which occurred today. It is a most cowardly and despicable act, which must receive the firm condemnation of all. Shinzo Abe did not deserve to die this way.

I recall my official visit to Japan in December 2018, where among other things, Ghana and Japan vowed to continue fostering the excellent relations that already exist between our two nations. At that time, I was the longest-serving and most successful Prime Minister in modern Japan. He showed his steadfast support for democratic administration, respect for human rights, and individual liberties during that tour, and he was a most kind host. Unfortunately, he tragically passed while while exercising these rights. A distinguished democrat, a patriot, and a noble son have been lost to Japan. All those who had the honor and pleasure of knowing and meeting him will miss him.

May he rest in eternal peace. Amen!!
